Bagpuss, aka 'The Most Important, The Most Beautiful, The Most Magical Saggy, Old Cloth Cat in the Whole Wide World' is a national treasure and one of the most famous cats in the world.
Masterfully compiled by Dan Postgate, Bagpuss: The Complete Scripts will contain facsimiles of all thirteen scripts with annotations by its original writer, Oliver Postgate. It will also include an introduction from Dan, specially commissioned photographs of the characters from the show, archive behind-the-scenes photos from the Postgate-Firmin collection, lyrics from all of the songs, and contributions from its musicians, Sandra Kerr and John Faulkner.
Bagpuss first aired in 1974 and more recently was replayed on BBC iPlayer in 2021. In 1999 it topped the viewers poll of best loved children's series of all time.
In this book, fans will be delighted to discover that Gabriel the Toad was based on a real toad that lived in the basement of Peter Firmin's flat and that the songs in the series were inspired by international folk music. Will there be much info in the BTS of the puppets themselves? I've always been fascinated in the mechanism behind Gabriel the Toad. He moves so much differently to all the other characters in the show that it's made me curious as to how he worked.
